What age is a good age to get Invisalign?

If your teen is suffering from dental misalignment issues and problems with his bite, he will almost certainly have been referred for orthodontic treatment. These solutions are designed specifically to help move teeth and jaws into an improved position to help eliminate dental problems and give the patient a smile that they feel greater confidence in sharing.

Invisalign is one of the most popular forms of orthodontic treatment now available since it eliminates the majority of the compromises which must be made by patients opting for traditional braces. It is also almost completely transparent in nature, preventing your child from feeling self-conscious about their smile while undergoing treatment. However, not every patient is immediately suitable for Invisalign and in some cases, it may be necessary for your child to wait a little longer before he can start this popular orthodontic treatment.

What is the ideal age to start Invisalign treatment?

Most Invisalign treatment programs begin between the ages of 12 and 15. However, there is some flexibility in this. While there is officially no minimum age at which a patient can start Invisalign, there are a number of considerations that must be taken into account before treatment can begin.

Firstly, patients must have virtually all of their adult teeth in place. The rate at which children lose their first set of teeth and receive their permanent, adult teeth can vary tremendously. While one patient may have all of their adult teeth in place by aged 12, others may still be losing infant teeth until their 14th birthday. However, since further tooth eruptions can cause disruption to the alignment of teeth, it is important that your dentist waits until as many adult teeth are in place as possible before treatment commences.

Secondly, your child must be mature enough to take on the responsibilities that are attached to the Invisalign treatment program. Invisalign only works if you adhere exactly to the recommended wear times. These are a minimum of 22 hours during each 24-hour period, where the aligners are only removed for your teen to clean his teeth and for him to eat. They must be placed straight back in after cleaning and eating. In addition to this, the aligners must be worn in order, with each aligner being used for a prescribed period of time before moving on to the next one in the series. Typically, this is between 2 and 3 weeks for each aligner. Failure to commit to these requirements can significantly affect the success of your teen’s treatment.

If your child has nearly all of his adult teeth and is responsible enough to make a commitment to having straighter, more attractive teeth, he may be ready for Invisalign.

How long will my teen’s Invisalign treatment take?

Every patient is different, and their treatment plans are tailored to their unique requirements. Depending on the severity of your child’s dental problems, his Invisalign treatment may require him to wear aligners for as little as 9 months or as many as 24 months. We will be able to give you a fairly accurate estimation during your child’s consultation, but this is dependent on the wear-time requirements being met continuously. Even wearing your aligners for just one hour less each day than is recommended can severely affect your treatment time as well as prevent your teeth from being in the correct position when you move onto the next aligner in the series.
