Is Invisalign® right for me?

While impeccably straight teeth are high on the wish list of anyone wishing to achieve an esthetically ‘perfect’ smile, minimizing gaps within your teeth can also be extremely beneficial to your oral health.

Unfortunately, very few of us are blessed with teeth that are naturally well aligned. In the past, many patients have been forced to wear traditional, metal orthodontic braces in order to straighten their teeth and although the modern versions are a vastly improved, there are still many limitation to wearing a device filled with wires and bands. Thankfully, there have been many innovations in the field of dentistry, including the creation of Invisalign®.

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a ground-breaking new solution for patients who have crooked or overlapping teeth, gaps in their smile or mild to moderate issues with their bite. The treatment program uses a series of comfortable, plastic liners which have been custom-designed for the individual patient, each which applies slight force to the teeth to encourage them to move into the desired position. Unlike traditional braces, which required a visit to the dentist to adjust the wires and bands at the end of each phase of movement, with Invisalign® the patient simply needs to start wearing the next liner in the series.

How do the liners work and how are the different?

With Invisalign®, every program of treatment is tailored specifically to the needs of each patient. Using advanced mapping technology, it is possible to create an accurate plan for the way in which it is necessary for your teeth to move to get them into the final desired position. This plan is then used to create individual liners for each step of movement, with the first liner being an accurate fit for the starting location of your teeth, and the last being a perfect fit for when your teeth move into their final position.

This technology also makes it possible for us to show you the final, projected position of your teeth, enabling you to ensure you are happy with the result before you commit to the treatment program.

What are the advantages of Invisalign®?

Many patients are choosing Invisalign® over traditional orthodontic braces wherever possible because of the number of unique advantages that the program offers. These include:

Invisalign® liners are created from clear plastic, making them virtually imperceptible when worn. This makes patients who use Invisalign® much less self-conscious than those who wear traditional braces.

Invisalign® liners do need to be taken out when you eat or drink, but the benefit of this is that you can eat or drink anything you like! There is no need to avoid hard, chewy or sticky foods. You will be given a case for your aligner which means you can take it out discreetly (many people choose to pop to the bathroom to remove their liner and wash their hands), pop it into its case and then tuck in!

Improved oral health

The removable element of Invisalign® liners also benefits your overall oral health. While orthodontic braces can be difficult to clean around, thanks to the need to negotiate metal, brackets and wires, Invisalign® liners can be removed to allow you to clean your natural teeth properly. You will also need to brush your liners, but this can be done with just a toothbrush and cleaning paste.

Using Invisalign® will also help to reduce decay from forming in tiny, hard-to-clean pockets in between your teeth as it works to close the gaps between them.

Fewer maintenance visits

Another key benefit to choosing Invisalign® is that you can expect to attend check-ups on your progress only every couple of months, which is significantly less than if you were wearing a brace. Since there are no wires or brackets to interfere with, the visits are more comfortable and shorter too, making Invisalign® a more convenient solution for patients with full lives.

Are there any limitations to Invisalign®?

In order for your Invisalign® program to deliver the best possible result, you will need to wear your liners for a minimum of 22 hours every day until the treatment ends, removing them only for eating and cleaning. This requires an extensive commitment by the patient. If the liners are not worn for the recommended time, the treatment plan will be compromised and it may take considerably longer to achieve the desired result.
